Pooling our Resources

As there seems to be a false rumor floating around, let me correct that.  I have never said or written that I would close the Township's pool.  What I want to see is it run in a responsible way so that it is not losing $60,000. or more per year.

While reviewing the East Cocalico Board of Supervisors meeting minutes for 2004, I found these interesting comments on the finances of the Township's pool in a discussion of the way the snack bar was being run:

Imagine that... being upset over losing $6,000. a year on our pool!  My, how times have changed:

From the East Cocalico Township Annual Audit Report for 2008, page 34:

From the East Cocalico Township Annual Audit Report for 2008, page 36:

Summary for the Pool for 2008:

Actual Expenses:    $121,624.

 Actual Revenue:    $  60,135.

Net Loss for 2008:   $61,489.

And yet, with a 10 times greater loss than in 2003, I couldn't find any mention of this loss in the supervisors minutes.

Well, maybe 2009 will be better:

Summary table created out of all sections of the Approved 2009 East Cocalico Township Budget related to the pool:

I'll be anxious to see the 2009 Audit and find out how close they came this year!  Changes were made after they approved the budget.  The voted to pay Weaver's to run the snack bar for them (BOS minutes of May 20, 2009, p. 4; BOS workshop minutes of May 21, 2009, p. 3).  That could improve the bottom line somewhat.

I think it's a great idea to have a pool, however... on the financials I tend to agree with the late Clyde Kulp.
